22-June-2010 / Soweto Tour

Hector Peterson Memorial. He was 13 when he was shot by police. His death sent off the student uprising in Soweto.

This is where the water comes from for this entire neighborhood.

These houses were originally built for mine workers. No electricity, no running water. People are still living there today waiting for the gov't to supply new/better housing.

5 million people living in Soweto today.

20-June-2010 / Apartheid Museum & Brasil vs Cote d'Ivoire

Warmups at Soccer City for Brasil vs Cote d'Ivoire.

Matt and Joe on our way to the match.

Kump and Schuman on their way into the Gold Reef Casino. Jake did well, Joe broke even, I lost.

Inside the Apartheid Museum. You get a card when you pay that either says 'Non-White' or 'White' and that determines which entrance you take. Above are collected segregation signs from different places around Johannesburg.

19-June-2010 / Rhino & Lion Reserve Part 3

A jaguar sleeping in the sun.

Siberian tiger as it got up to 'greet' us at the fence. This is a very large animal.

Our only glimpse at a leopard, the last of the big 5.

Jake makes friends with this 7 month old female white lion.

2 white lions, both 7 months old. These 2 were not that interested in playing with us.

19-June-2010 / Rhino & Lion Reserve Part 2

After chewing on my ankles and wrists, this 3 month old gnaws on a water bottle.

Joe with a few baby while lions.

This is my favorite animal...a female white rhino with a baby at its side. This rhino is bigger than our Kia Picanto. Cape buffalo and a wildebeest in the background.

Very rare white lions at feeding time, chowing down on some dead horse carcass.

Cheetah at feeding time eating some horse meat.

19-June-2010 / Rhino & Lion Reserve Part 1 (Joe's first day here)

2 more males looking regal as hell.

After strolling past us, he decided to plop down to air out his undercarriage. Not much there if you ask me, considering he's the king of the jungle and all.

Big male lion walking towards. He literally walked right next to the car, at which point we quickly rolled up the windows and Jake said, 'I can't look.'

2 female lions taking a nap.

Gemboks.

18-June-2010 / Slovenia vs USA

We went ballistic after the second US goal.

Vuvuzelas going strong.

Ellis Park - If you saw Invictus, the RSA rugby team played here.

17-June-2010 / Argentina vs South Korea

For those who care, that's Messi.

4 rows from the field.

Our first match at Soccer City in Jo'burg.

15-16-June-2010 / Kruger Safari Day 3 & 4

Our accommodation at a game reserve just outside Kruger Nat'l Park.

Jake pretends to be Indiana Jones.

Many giraffes.

Giraffes, zebras, and wildebeests grazing together like friends.

14-June-2010 / Kruger Safari Day 2 (cont'd)

The beginning of our night drive. We later saw a male lion who's face was the size of my chest relaxing under a tree.

Old man water buffalo, one of the big five.

A giraffe is an alien creature.

14-June-2010 / Kruger Safari Day 2

Lion hill part 4 - Big elephant's job done. Now it's off to the watering hole for a mud bath. Check the lions on the right.

Lion hill part 3 - Big f'ing elephant continues charge up the hill.

Lion hill part 2 - Big f'ing elephant storms in and chases the lions off the hill.

Lion hill part 1 - our first sighting of lions. There were about 5 of them around this hill stalking some prey.

Zebras are magic.

13-June-2010 / Kruger Safari Day 1 (cont'd)

Our accomodations. We were not very prepared and slept in full clothes...everything we could grab. I bought a sleeping bag the following day.

Birds nest in that tree because it's safe. That's a big hippo at the base of the tree singin' a real pretty tune.

13-June-2010 / Kruger Safari Day 1

When elephants cross the street, you should stop.

The big guy on the right is called a Kudu. It made me feel like I was in some 1980's Ridley Scott fantasy movie.

Mama baboon with baby baboon hanging on.

We had lunch underneath a slew of bats. Very weird creatures.

After sleeping for about a half hour and riding in a cramped van for 6 hours, the last thing Jake really wanted was to ride in an open jeep on the highway.

12-June-2010 / England vs. USA

Donovan lines up a corner.

Kump and Schuman 15 rows from the field at England vs USA.

George Washington made an appearance at the gate.

After hours of traffic, we parked here at a township shebeen and had a cocktail with some locals. Shebeens are essentially just like speakeasies, only they've since kept the name.
